He ran the extraction. The archive was unusually large for a version 0.4, packed with gigabytes of uncompressed audio files and high-resolution textures. When he clicked the executable, the screen didn’t show a logo or a loading bar. Instead, it flickered to a live feed of a dense, hyper-realistic forest.

Elias sat in the silence of his room, the blue light of his empty desktop reflecting in his eyes. He reached for the rusted drive to unplug it, but his hand stopped. It was hot—searingly hot. When he finally pulled it out, he saw that the metal casing had been etched with a new line of text: SEE YOU AT 0.5.

“You’re early,” the box read. “We aren't expected until version 1.0.”

The computer fans began to scream, reaching a high-pitched whine that shook his desk. The screen went black, and the file——simply deleted itself.

Suddenly, he reached a clearing. In the center sat a low-poly figure of a person at a desk, backlit by a flickering monitor. Elias moved closer. The figure didn't turn around, but a text box appeared at the bottom of his screen.
